Everything You Need to Consider About Your Pool This Winter

Pools Add Value to Your Home, Despite the Season

Don’t let winter hold you back from getting the pool of your dreams. A pool is a great addition to any landscape, no matter the season. Pools add value to your home and provide a source of fun and relaxation for your family.

For pool owners, winter means a shift in pool care and maintenance, which is important to protect your investment in your home and landscaping. Here are some tips on how to take care of your pool during the cold winter months so that it’s in good condition when you’re ready to open it again in the spring:

Caring for Your Pool During the Winter:

  1. Winterize Your Pool

If you have a pool, you’ve probably already shut it down for winter. Closing your pool is the first thing you should do once the weather starts to dip.

Tip: Purchase a pool chemical kit – they come with all the chemicals you need to close your pool.

  1. Choose the Right Cover

Properly covering your pool is essential to ensuring it has a long lifespan. While most pool owners use bags filled with water or sand to secure the pool cover, this method can be an unsightly eyesore for your winter landscape.

Instead, consider purchasing a pool safety cover. These covers are more securely fastened to your pool deck and are designed to withstand heavy weight – so if a child accidentally steps on the pool cover they won’t fall in.

The added safety of this type of pool cover will give you peace of mind, but it’s also a great way to protect your pool from heavy snowfalls. Plus, because it’s anchored to your pool deck it looks sleek and won’t impede on the beauty of your yard.

  1. Keep Your Cover Clear During Winter

Winter pool maintenance doesn’t end with closing your pool. Keep your pool cover clear to ensure it doesn’t rip or sag from snow buildup. If ice builds up on the cover of your pool, allow it to melt before pumping it off the cover.  Keep an eye on the snow and ice levels and routinely clear away what you can to protect your pool over the winter months.

  1. Get a Jump on Spring

When the first signs of spring finally roll around and the water starts to thaw, lift a corner of your pool cover and add some liquid chlorine. This will give the water an added boost when you go to open the pool once stable, warmer temperatures arrive.

Is This the Year Your Family Gets a Pool?

Is this the year your family gets a pool?

Your family has been asking for years. Is this finally the swimming pool summer for your family? Before you dive in, know your options.

Here’s everything you should know before committing to any backyard water feature plans, from pools to hot tubs and landscaping elements.

How much flexibility is in your budget?

Budget is the biggest factor in your pool purchase and installation, and any landscaping you complete to accompany it.

Your options include:

Every type has the potential to look great on your property. It’s all about doing it right for your unique space.

Your new mini pool

A mini pool will cost somewhere between $10,000 – $15,000 installed, depending on the size and quality.

Small pools and swim spas give your family a swimming pool experience without the requirement of a large, open property.

These are especially popular in densely built areas like the suburbs in north Mississauga and Oakville.

Yours can start as a basic plunge pool to cool off or float in while reading a great book – think benches with massage jets.

It is built like any inground pool, customized to fit smaller spaces.

These mini pools integrate into your landscaping with waterfalls or other water features (spill over spas) and provide plenty of social space for friends and family (and nice private space for you and your partner).

The only limit is your:

  • Space
  • Imagination
  • Budget

Custom vinyl-lined pools

Your custom vinyl pool can take any shape you want. It can work with your current landscaping or provide the centerpiece for a whole new backyard design.

It’s custom-fitted with liners that retain an even vinyl thickness throughout the pool. That means long years of use and no fadng. You can also upgrade to insulated walls, a more efficient (and nicer feeling) option.

You can also customize with lots of unique features,

  • Molded easy-entry steps
  • Natural stone coping
  • Waterfalls
  • In-pool lighting
  • Seating areas with massage jets

Your pool can be so much more than a cool space to float (of course, it can be that too).

It starts around $40,000.

Inground hot tubs

Maybe you’re more of a lounger.

An inground hot tub gives you a relaxing, warm space to spend nights under the stars, year round, at a price comparable to a standard hot tub.

Skip the unsightly square tub sticking out like a sore thumb on your patio. Your inground hot tub melts into the landscape, especially with features like natural stone coping and steps, or a waterfall.

These inground hot tubs are an accessible option for anyone considering a tub purchase already. Let your imagination run a little, and consider the lifestyle that’s within reach.

Make your backyard an oasis

Homeowners use swimming pools and hot tubs to turn their backyards into private escapes for family and friends.

No matter what type you want, you can add many different features to turn the rest of your backyard into a relaxing oasis.

  • Waterfalls
  • Deck jets
  • Tiki bars
  • Pergolas
  • Outdoor kitchens
  • And so much more!

Instead of driving 5 hours to the cottage, why not invest in your backyard and enjoy the outdoor beauty every day of the week?

Why Winter is the Right Time for Your Interior Home Renovation

Get Better Value with a Winter Renovation

Most families choose to undertake home renovations in the spring or summer, and that’s just fine.

But an interior home renovation in the winter holds a lot of advantages over the summer. As a homeowner, you get:

  • Better scheduling.
  • Faster permits.
  • Great incentives.
  • …and more.

So before you shelf those renovation plans for the year, take a look at why winter renovations are actually better for most families than summer or spring renovations.

What kind of renovation are you planning?

Some renovations will be great to complete before you hit the thick of the holiday entertaining season.

  • Feature walls.
  • A dramatic new mantle.
  • Full basement completing.

Your renovation might be quicker than you think.

Call to figure out a timeline with our team and see if your renovation can get done before your family arrives for holiday celebrations.

Better scheduling options for your winter interior renovation.

Most families get involved in interior renovations in the spring and summer, leaving contractor schedules wide open in the winter.

It’s a win for you, since the contractor is free to work comfortably around your schedule.

Chances are your contractor can pick up your project immediately and get to work within the week. The sooner the project starts, the sooner it ends – the sooner you have your new basement.

Taking a vacation? Come home to a renovated living space!

landscaping mississaugaIf your family plans to travel this winter, like many do, book a renovation while you’re away.

You’ll avoid the disruption to your daily life and won’t live through any of the stress most homeowners feel during any kind of home renovation.

Leave for your trip and come home to a fresh, new feature or living space. It’s the best way to get a home reno done.

Get those building permits fast.

Government agencies run into the same slowdowns as contractors during the winter.

With less work going on, they tend to get permits done quicker than usual.

The shortage of overall building projects in the winter means yours gets a bump right ot the front of the non-existent line!

It’s another factor helping move your renovation forward to completion before the holidays are upon us.

Get the end-of-season incentives and price reductions.

The end of the year usually brings the best price incentives for building products.

If you want to save money on your renovation (and really, who doesn’t?), this is a huge opportunity.

A handful of stone suppliers in the GTA are offering end of season clearance prices, up to 70% off stone products. If your project requires stone, now is the time!

The working conditions are right.

Dry air helps concrete and other building compounds dry quicker, speeding up your overall renovation timeline.

If the conditions outside are just right, it’s actually better to pour concrete footers for your large home addition this time of year. Frozen ground and dry air are perfect conditions for digging foundations and pouring footers.

Depending on your project, the cold, dry weather could really work for you.

There’s still time to get your interior renovation done before your holiday entertaining hits, and the possibility for money savings and flexible scheduling make the winter a prime time of year for interior home renovations.
