Consolidating Landscape Projects with One Contractor

Backyard Landscape

When planning a new landscaping project for around your deck, pool, or elsewhere in your yard, hiring a single landscape contractor will take the hassle out of dealing with multiple companies and work processes, and help you build a solid relationship with one person or company that you trust to get your projects completed on time and to your expectations.

Contractors have the expertise and a broad network to utilize, that will help you make the best creative and practical decisions for your yard. Read on to see some of the ways that having one contractor can assist you in creating a beautiful space for your backyard.

Benefits of Using a Single Contractor for Your Landscaping

Expertise

Landscape contractors have a deep understanding of the science behind landscaping a yard. Contractors are familiar with current trends and have the knowledge of what works well with each specific property. Each yard has an individual design, size and different complexities, and landscapers know what works in certain situations and what does not.

Deck in a Backyard

If you’re looking to add landscaping around your deck for privacy, a contractor can plan a way to create a private space that reduces visibility and blocks out noise while maintaining its appeal. Landscaping around raised decks can be especially difficult to visualize but contractors are equipped with the knowledge of how to develop an effective design. Because of their expertise in the field, they can generate ideas that you may not have considered before.

Uniform Design

Having an individual contractor on your project will not only streamline the management aspect of the process from conceptual ideas to budget planning and construction, but it will also help maintain a uniform look to your space.

A contractor can develop an overall plan of ideas and designs that pull together all aspects of your yard (fence, pool, interlock, deck design, etc.) to complement each other.

Simplified Budget

Having a single contractor is cost-effective as it prevents redundant work. The contractor can create a cohesive strategy that pieces together all aspects of the landscaping project, which also makes billing a simpler process.

Because landscape professionals have experience in the field, they have an intimate understanding of associated costs and are equipped to ensure that your project stays within your desired budget.

Solid Relationship

Working with a single landscaper makes it easier to develop a strong working relationship and someone you trust to develop your vision. When a contractor is working closely with you to build a design, it’s easier to establish a foundation of trust and it’s likely that you will feel more comfortable with the development of the project when you can focus on this vision together. Additionally, it saves time and effort when one person is responsible for the organization and execution, and it’s clear who to communicate with every step of the way.

Contractors also have existing relationships with other reputable service providers that can assist with whatever additional requirements a project may have, while acting as a liaison to take care of the details for you.

Trust the Experts at Green Scene Landscaping

The team at Green Scene Landscaping would love to partner with you to create the backyard you have always dreamed of. Book a consultation with one of our experienced designers or contact us any time for assistance in planning your next landscaping project.

Rustic Outdoor Fireplace Ideas for 2019

fire pit

New Year is a time for change and reflection and also the perfect opportunity to update your surroundings. Your outdoor space is a great place to start. Outdoor fireplaces are a main contender, bringing with them a plethora of benefits. They can enhance your mood and turn your yard into a glorious outdoor haven.

Read on for their amazing qualities and new outdoor fireplace trends to transform your space in 2019.

5 Rustic Outdoor Fireplace Ideas

Whether fireplace or fire pit, there’s a rustic look suitable to everyone’s tastes. Fire adds a certain ‘je ne sais quoi’ to an outdoor space. It’s a natural element that creates a focal point and turns an ordinary space into something quite spectacular.

1. A Tiny Bit Traditional – A classical fireplace gets an update thanks to some clever design work. Bring the indoors outside with a traditional looking fireplace in natural stone. Create a living space to mimic the perfect, cozy family room. Use large cushions and throws to really enjoy your outdoor living space.

2. Minimal Masterpiece – Concrete is a must and a real staple for honing in on the minimalism trend. Try a low, wide fireplace and play around with different textures and finishes. A darker contrasting mantle showcases a bespoke look. Create an opening and place fresh cut logs. Matching concrete seating and dining options brings the whole look together.

3. Classic Country – A red brick work fireplace frames the perfect country scene. Incorporate wrought iron, brick or stone fittings, and marry them with contrasting tables and chairs. Woven or beaded materials adds an extra element and creates a sense of care-free relaxation.

4. Awesome Open Pit – To really appreciate the flames on a fire, an open fire pit is the best choice. Choose a masonry brick pit to take yourself back to memories of camping trips. Use reclaimed logs and wood to create bespoke details and furniture pieces. Huge throw pillows and lanterns add a touch of glamour to your rugged outdoor spot.

5. Beautiful Bonfire Pit – Keep all of the focus on your fire pit. Try a teak-and-steel lava-rock fire pit. Showcase the flames and use a wood surround seating bench. Keep colours natural and clean to create a blank canvas.

Benefits of Having an Outdoor Fireplace

• A fire pit/fireplace adds ambience to an outdoor space and, due to the heat and light it emits, allows you to use your deck/yard into the later evening and the colder months.
• The living room may not be the most favoured place in the home anymore. An outdoor fire allows you to sit with loved ones and create new, special memories.
• Toast marshmallows and sit around singing – no longer are fire pits reserved for holidays and camping. Enjoy special times all year round.
• Increase your property value with a fireplace and beautiful outdoor living space.
• Give yourself an extra space to cook and enjoy meals.

Come to Green Scene Landscaping for your new outdoor fireplace. We create beautiful custom masonry fireplaces comprised of a variety of materials such as:

• Brick
• Natural Stone
• Flagstone
• River Rock
• Sandstone

Fall Jobs For Your Outdoor Stone Landscaping

Setting your home apart from your neighbours and creating an outdoor space where friends and family can gather to create memories is every homeowner’s goal.

Something else that’s important to homeowners? Increasing home value with features that are aesthetically pleasing and serve functional purposes.

The best way to accomplish all of this is with outdoor stone landscaping.

Outdoor Stone Hardscaping for Exquisite Outdoor Living

At Green Scene Landscaping, we design and install using the most premium natural and man-made materials that will bring a new and unique experience to your outdoor lifestyle.

A natural, outdoor stone landscape adds appeal and value to your property, whether it’s used for:

  • Driveways
  • Garden footpaths
  • Patios
  • Retaining walls
  • Design accents
  • Swimming pool waterfalls

Natural stone brings depth, variety and unique colour to your home’s landscaping. But how can you keep your stone looking as great as it did when it was first installed? How can you protect your hardscape from the harsh Canadian elements?

3 Things to Do to Protect Your Stone Landscape This Winter

Natural outdoor stone hardscaping and landscaping is an investment that will provide you and your family with endless opportunities for entertainment.

To keep these surfaces looking their best, you’ll need to do routine maintenance. Here are our top tips for regular hardscape maintenance—just in time for the colder, harsher months!

1. Regular Upkeep

Sweep the surfaces of your natural stone regularly to keep it clear of leaves and other debris. This is especially important during fall when leaves start to decompose, leaving behind stains and mold.

If leaves have already begun to leave marks on your stone hardscape, use a hose to wash the surface, along with a strong cleaning solution to lift the stain.

If weeds, grass or other plants have made their way in between cracks in the tiles, be sure to remove the roots completely to prevent your tiles from separating and getting damaged.

2. Seal Your Outdoor Stone

If you have not already, sealing your outdoor stone surfaces has many benefits that will keep your hardscape looking its best.

Sealing your stone can:

  • Extend the lifespan of your outdoor stone
  • Prevent fading
  • Protect the stone from damage
  • Simplify maintenance and care

3. Use Sand to Prevent Plants

It is recommended to sweep polymeric sand into the joints or cracks of your outdoor stone.

This special type of sand works to help hold the pavers and tiles in place. It also helps prevent weeds from growing between the stones, which is essential to ensure the stones don’t shift or crack.

Need Outdoor Stone Landscaping? Now Is the Time

When it comes to building outdoor stone patios or decks, many people think spring and summer are the best seasons to do so. However, fall is a great time to install new outdoor stone landscaping. Why? Well…

  • During the fall, you are less likely to be using your outdoor space as much as you would in the warmer months like spring and summer.
  • You don’t need to worry about vegetation or insect pests interfering, because they will most likely already be dormant.
  • Once spring rolls around, you will be able to enjoy your outdoor stone landscaping instead of waiting for construction to be completed.

Let Us Help You With Your Stonework

Why the warranty on your stone landscaping products matters

Beyond the obvious – you’re protected from any manufacturer defects – what benefit is there to a landscape stone warranty?

Landscape warranties indicate the quality of the product you buy.

Most stone products installed on your property come with some kind of warranty.

Manufacturers never want to absorb the cost of a broken or faulty product, so if your product is covered by a warranty, the manufacturer expects the product to last substantially longer than the warranty period.

Why substantially longer? They want a buffer. If they think the product will stay in perfect condition for 50 years, you might see a 35 year warranty.

That’s good for you!

Two of the most popular stone suppliers offer similar warranties:

  • Unilock
  • Permacon

Get the details here so in the rare instance of a warranty claim, you know what you’re entitled to.

What does your Unilock warranty protect you from?

Unilock pioneered the lifetime guarantee in the concrete paver industry. It covers more than 10 billion stones currently installed across the continent, and says a lot about the quality of the product.

Unilock’s transferable lifetime guarantee covers residential:

  • Paving stones
  • Slabs
  • Retaining wall units
  • Natural stone

As long as your stone is installed and maintained to Unilock’s guidelines, your warranty claim will be honoured without a hiccup.

Installation falls under the Green Scene warranty (a 5 year warranty on all workmanship – where the industry standard is 1 year). So your new stone patio, pool surrounds or other feature is as safe and smart an investment as you can make.

Make sure you register your Unilock stone pavers within 60 days of purchase.

How does a Permacon warranty measure up?

Permacon guarantees the structural integrity of concrete landscaping and masonry products for 50 years.

It’s not as long as Unilock’s warranty, but it is more than enough for any homeowner to feel adequately protected. Who lives in the same home for 50 years these days anyway?

The warranty applies to normal, non-abusive use of the product, and covers any abnormal deterioration of surfaces that may be caused by the use of sodium chloride for de-icing pavers, slabs or steps.

It is also transferable to any new property owners for the duration of the warranty. Like Unilock, you will have to discuss installation warranty with your contractor.

How do you know the manufacturer will honour claims honestly?

Landscaping manufacturers get by on word of mouth more than anything else.

Industry competition is fierce, and it’s in the manufacturer’s best interest to go above and beyond in all warranty claims.

We work with Unilock and Permacon often, and they’re leaders in the industry for a reason. While extremely rare, warranty claims are always handled quickly and professionally.

Combine these product warranties with the workmanship warranty we offer and you have a rock-solid guarantee of quality on your landscape.

If you want to talk about a specific manufacturer, give us a call. We’re happy to share what we know and help get your landscape project moving smoothly.

Of course, if you’re already loyal to a manufacturer, you can ask us to only use its products in your landscape renovation.

Why a Drought Tolerant Landscape is Your Next Home Upgrade | Water Saving Gardens

Why a drought tolerant landscape is your next home upgrade

A drought tolerant landscape doesn’t have to look like a desert.

If you do it right, it looks as vibrant as your neighbours’, and costs you a whole lot less to maintain.

drought tolerant gardenOf course you can save money on your landscape by:

  • Using local plants.
  • Avoiding expensive pesticides.
  • Laying new mulch every year.

But the biggest savings come from using less water to maintain your garden.

That means planting a drought tolerant garden that uses less water and keeps the vibrant colour your family loves.

Your first season

Drought tolerant plants take a season to establish a foothold in your landscape, so water them like any other plant in the first season.

Their roots grow deeper and wider than other plant varieties, and a well-established drought tolerant plant does better with way less water next year.

Excellent drought tolerant plants for your garden

Lots of colourful, drought tolerant shrubs, perennials, grasses, vines and trees grow naturally in Ontario. Your favourite garden centre can point you in the right direction.

We have some favourites (not all are local).

Your drought tolerant garden provides colour and variety, and draw bees and birds, with these plants.

Drought tolerant plantsShrubs like…

  • Tamarisk
  • Ninebark
  • Dwarf Burning Bush
  • Butterfly bush
  • Ivory halo dogwood
  • Smokebush

Or flowering plants like…

  • Geranium
  • Echinacea
  • Hosta
  • Lavender
  • Hens and chicks
  • Daylilly
  • Yarrow

Mediterranean plants make ideal drought tolerant garden features. Some require no water through even the most painful heatwaves. They’re well suited to low water, poor quality soil environments.

Ornamental grasses are also mainstays of low water consumption gardens. There are thousands of varieties, and all are drought resistant.

Mulch is always present in drought tolerant gardens

Landscape MulchMulch reduces the amount of water lost to evaporation.

Even if you water your plants with a drip system feeding the roots almost directly, you inevitably lose moisture to evaporation.

Mulch creates a barrier between the heat of the sun, the wind, and your moist soil – locking that moisture where it’s needed most.

And more, mulch:

  • Blocks the growth of weeds in your soil.
  • Regulates the temperature of the soil to insulate plants from day and night temperature fluctuations.
  • Breaks down over time to improve soil composition.
  • Increases biodiversity in your yard by giving a variety of insects and other tiny creatures homes and shelter.

Use at least 2-3 inches of mulch and top up seasonally.

Trees and shrubs benefit from mulch all year round, and vegetable gardens love it in the summer.

Rake your mulch seasonally to freshen up the colour.

Building a drought tolerant garden takes a lot of planning and careful design work. If you plant willy-nilly all over your property, your plants may not establish and give you the benefit you seek.

If you want some help with the planning and implementation of your low-water garden, we have the experience.

How to Find the Right Landscape Contractor for Your Family’s Renovation

How to find the right landscape contractor for your family’s reno

A good landscape contractor translates your new landscape design from paper to your property with few (if any) surprises. You get exactly what you imagine because communication is open, expectations are clear and your chosen contractor has the experience to complete the trickiest parts of your job.

Custom Fire PitThe right landscape contractor for your family’s reno has that, plus a little something intangible. You connect with them and trust them with your property (and hard-earned money).

When you shop around for your landscape contractor, finding that right one can be easy, or it can seem impossible. If you want to feel good about your investment, that perfect contractor is a necessity.

Here’s how you can see if the landscape contractor quoting your project is the right one for your family’s renovation.

Good vibrations

Your landscape contractor will spend a lot of time around your home. You need to feel comfortable professionally and socially with the team.

Your first impression is a strong indicator of the relationship you can have with your landscape contractor.

There are lots of good landscape contractors, so if you feel tension, resistance, impatience, or anything negative with the first one you call, move on to another option.

Trust the vibes you feel in your first contact with your landscaper.

Read the reviews

A landscaper who is proud of his or her work will ask customers for reviews.

You can find some of ours (and look up the other contractors you are considering) on Houzz, and more on Homestarz.

Consumers are more likely to leave negative reviews online than positive. If your contractor has an overall positive rating on reviews sites, you can be confident in the quality of the work.

You might also come across reviews that verify your good vibes about the contractor. So read as many as you need.

Check the online portfolio

It’s easy to take pictures of completed jobs and post them online.

Perfect backyard landscapeIf a landscape contractor is proud of his/her work, you’ll find it on the website.

Browse the pictures and look for work resembling your landscape vision. Don’t be dazzled by the quality of the pictures themselves. Always look at the quality of the work .

It’s always encouraging to find a unique feature you want in your landscape in the portfolio of your landscape contractor.

Look for industry memberships

Your landscape contractors should be committed to improving the craft.

We are members of Landscape Ontario, and an authorized Unilock contractor.

Industry memberships reflect a level professionalism most homeowners prefer from their contractor. Look around the website or ask your contractor what memberships they have.

Ask about guarantees

Your landscape contractor will use warrantied products, but also offer warranty coverage on the work.

Our team offers a 5 year guarantee on all work (and longer, if we continue maintaining your property after the landscape renovation is done).

Ask your prospective contractor about any guarantees, and make sure they provide documentation on paper.

Find out about payment options

You shouldn’t be forced into a strange payment scheme.

Find out about your payment options and discuss any concerns you have with your contractor.

You plan to invest tens of thousands of dollars into your outdoor living space, and you deserve exactly what you want for that substantial investment.

Some contractors may offer a half-befrore, half-after payment option, others a 1/3 at a time, and others might allow you to pay in full upon completion of the project.

Call a few contractors for quotes and write down your impressions of them as you talk over the phone. Take the time to choose your favourite – it’s worth it.

An outdoor kitchen is just what the doctor ordered

Outdoor kitchen

A BBQ on your patio is great, but a full outdoor kitchen is better.

It’s an investment in the outdoor and family-entertaining lifestyle you live, and it increases the value (and appeal) of your house in the competitive southern Ontario real estate market.

You should never leave everything up to your builder, no matter how experienced they are. It’s important to stay present through the process so you are never surprised by the choice your builder makes.

Follow these tips and you’re more likely to avoid any surprises as your outdoor kitchen comes together.

Don’t rush the planning

Poor planning explains most badly executed outdoor kitchens.

Measure your space, draw out a plan. Make some calls for quotes on materials, appliances, landscaping, etc…

Outdoor kitchen sketch

Write out your intended use for the kitchen and get specific. Don’t just write cooking – of course you plan to cook.

  • What kind of meals will you most likely cook outside?
  • What size groups do you intend to entertain? How many seasons do you hope to use the kitchen for?
  • Will you transport things back and forth between your main kitchen, or do you expect your outdoor kitchen to be fully self-contained?

Get the details down so you are clear when you bring in a contractor.

Update your knowledge

Appliance features change from year to year, and most people buy new appliances every decade or so. A lot has changed since the last time you bought a cooktop.

Get a firm grasp of what’s available.

An outdoor fridge had to be brought in over the winter 10 years ago. Today, you just unplug it and your fridge lives comfortably in the snowy, icy weather until you need to use it again in the spring.

Make your kitchen part of the scenery

Outdoor kitchen

The materials in the design of your outdoor kitchen should be dictated by the home and its surroundings

Use the same trim and stone you find on the exterior of the and in the landscape.

Or build with updated materials you plan to incorporate into your home and landscape down the road. Continuity is the key to making an outdoor kitchen that enhances your house and doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb.

Think about the size

If your home is large, your outdoor kitchen should be too.

If your home is a more modest size, the kitchen should reflect that.

After all, you aren’t building a home addition. It’s a home improvement.

Smart designs incorporate numerous structural elements to make a kitchen fit into its surroundings, including pergolas, screens and plantings.

Don’t ignore positioning

People using the pool shouldn’t have to walk past a hot grill to get a cold drink.

Guests sitting at the table shouldn’t be showered with smoke from the grill.

You shouldn’t be cut off from the social part of entertaining because you’re cooking.

Where will you put food after you take it off the grill? Where will you put a dirty pot?

The more you think about the kitchen as part of a whole functional space, the better (of course, your designer is here to help you with that. You don’t have to be the expert, you just have to think about it).

Don’t try to save money by cutting out lights

Kitchen lights

It’s hard to see food cooking on a grill at night, so you need bright task lighting.

It’s also hard, to eat food if you can’t see it.

Combined kitchen and dining areas, like your outdoor kitchen, should have ambient and ornamental as well as task lighting.

We also recommend dimmer switches, so the light can match the situation.

Outdoor cooking gives opportunities to do things you don’t normally do with an indoor kitchen. Searing steaks over incredibly high heat, smoking slabs of ribs for hours, or cook pizza in a wood-fired oven are all more enjoyable outdoors. Make sure your kitchen design lets you do everything you want to do more of.

We can help you design an outdoor kitchen your family will love, and handle all the building work, keeping you involved through the entire process.

This is a partnership, not a simple transaction. Your outdoor kitchen will serve your family for years, it’s important to get it right.

Give us a call today to talk about your vision and find out if we are the right fit to build you rnew luxury outdoor kitchen.

Landscaping Trends in 2018 | Interlock, Decks and Outdoor Kitchens

A new year brings new landscaping trends.

Some are perennial trends, staying in style year after year, like:

  • Creative container combos.
  • Large, natural (looking) hardscapes.
  • Custom decks.

backyard deck

Others come into trend slowly and take hold in the perennial category over time. In 2018, we think these qualify:

  • Local plants.
  • Outdoor kitchens.
  • Drought resistant gardening.

Your property can be more comfortable, usable and desirable (if you decide to sell) by picking up one a few of these landscaping trends in 2018.

Creative container combos

When planning the plants you want in your front or backyard, don’t neglect containers. They provide beautiful accents and lend texture to an outdoor space.

Combine plants within a container to provide an extra, unexpected splash of color. Containers can be the perfect addition to a pool patio, where many families leave stonework bare.

Take a before and after picture and you will be shocked by how more inviting your pool area is with a few containers.

Large, natural hardscapes

Deck builder burlingtonHardscapes never go out of style. Even a  hardscape design form the 70’s can still look great, as long as it isn’t cracked to pieces or ensconced in weeds.

The easiest way to increase the value and aesthetic appeal of your outdoor space is by installing a natural hardscape – interlocking pavers or other forms of natural stone.

Whatever you plan this year, get the look your neighbours envy with stone products galore.

Custom decks

What do you want to do with your deck?

  • Will you entertain friends?
  • Will you cook under the stars with your family?
  • Do you dream of an elevated hot tub or fire pit?
  • Do you want to relax with a large set of patio furniture?

A deck made with synthetic wood products looks just like real wood, requires way less maintenance and lasts a whole lot longer.

It’s a good thing you waited until now to build your deck, because the products available were never so good. You can have the best deck available this year.

Local plants and drought resistant gardening

Local plants and drought resistant gardens work together.

garden path landscapingLocal plants are already adapted to your climate, so they cope well with the natural water available. They also support the small insects and animals that make a back yard really come alive.

Good drought tolerant perennial plants include:

  • Portulaca
  • Celosia
  • Amaranth
  • Gomphrena
  • Sunflower

Add some drought resistant shrubs or trees, like:

  • Honey locust.
  • Turkish hazel.
  • Russian olive.
  • Sea buckthorn.
  • Sumac.
  • Bayberry.
  • Honeysuckle.
  • Butterflybush.

Outdoor kitchens

Outdoor kitchens overlap with hardscaping, but deserve a separate mention.

Your outdoor kitchen can be as simple as a BBQ with a plumbed in sink, or it can include preparation surfaces, serving areas, multiple cooktops, refrigeration, and just about anything you can imagine.

An outdoor kitchen is already a huge selling point for homes in the GTA, so whenever you’re ready to move, the outdoor kitchen you get years of enjoyment from will help your property stand out.

2018 can be your family’s outdoor living year.

Pick one or more of these trends and give your family the home retreat of their dreams.

Our team can help design, build and install any and all of your landscaping projects.

  • Plan out what you want, so you know exactly what to ask for.

  • Set a range, not a number. Aim to complete a landscape renovation at the low end of your budget, but leave space for unplanned expenses.

Here’s why your home needs a feature wall

A feature wall turns one of the larger walls in any room into a focal point.

What makes these great additions to your home?

  • It makes a room more welcoming.
  • It makes small spaces more interesting, and can even make them feel bigger.
  • It can help organize open areas into more distinct purpose-oriented spaces.

What makes them challenging to get right?

  • The wrong colour, texture, pattern or material can easily become dated quickly.
  • Poor choice of any of the above pieces can clash with other elements in the room.
  • If the space is already crowded with furniture or other pieces, an accent can be too loud.

Want to know how to choose a wall for your feature? Catch the rest of the blog here.

2017 has been amazing, and we owe that entirely to our customers. You’ve given us unique and exciting projects to work on, and we hope every one of you is still in love with your landscaping or interior renovation.
